 Game News |
After working with GE for over a year, I took a several month long hiatus from development. This is due to that I had ran into several critical design flaws within the core game code. As it stood I was going to have to rewrite major portions of the game to fix these flaws. On top of that I had not played any FPS games in years, making that part of the game even harder to implement since there was no basis of reference of what gamers are used to.
So i decided to simply drop the entire project and quit for awhile. I went and played several FPS games to refresh my memory of what's needed to make it up to date. I also went back and started updating the Solurus Systems Mod for Freelancer. It turned out good in several ways...
- I discovered a really nasty bug in my core file IO code that had been there for at least 2 years. This bug was corrupting random files in the autoupdate files for my mod. Once fixed the user had the exact same files the server had and it stopped most of the random crashes.
- The updater got a major overhaul so it could practically handle up to 60k files (depending on memory - this 1 gig) downloadable and installable. I have yet to see anything remotely approach this limit for anything that I've created (a full SSM installation is 11,982 files).
- This also fixed the GE updater at the same time, all I had to do was recompile it.
- SSM got a major FX update, most notably in the PvP and PvE departments...
- Made a major mod for Stalker as well with the help of Fur Ball and Yellow Eagle
So after defeating all of the games I tried, it's now time to go in and implement what I have seen and played. The GE code hasn't been wasted though. I have been trying to use as much of the original code as possible to speed development of the new version. It turns out that in just 3 weeks I managed to rebuild 4 months of code. In addition to that I am expanding the game to include a single player mode. I believe most people get to really know a game by playing the SP campaigns over playing on a MP server. Another new addition is the global server. This will link all of the servers together into a single location. The goal is to allow each server to be independently modded and these file are stored in individual mod folders on the player's machine. I believe this will create more cross server traffic while making the transition between servers with modded files seamless. All the player will need to do is select the server and any updated files will be automatically installed. This could even be extended to inter-server portals. This means cooperating servers could provide jumpholes that lead to an entirely different server and mod.
On another note this means the game also got a graphics overhaul. Everything is now based on HLSL shader 3.0. By the time this game reaches the final stages of development this shader version will be supported fairly widely.
If you wish to become a tester, get the autoupdater, install the game and post comments etc. Please keep it civil...
